Divergence Press is an online, open access, peer-reviewed journal and resource hub for contemporary music, hosted by the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) at the University of Huddersfield. The journal publishes work that examines a range of current practices in composition, performance, sonic arts, musical multimedia, creative uses of music technology, and other multidisciplinary work engaging with sound, space, and performance.
Divergence Press operates a rolling publication model, with articles published as they complete the peer review process and promoted through the social media platforms of CeReNeM and the University of Huddersfield Press. The journal accepts submissions on an open basis, without specific submission deadlines. Prior to 2018, the journal published themed issues, each curated by an individual editor.
CeReNeM is a community of world-leading artists and scholars who bring innovative and interdisciplinary perspectives to research in composition, performance, sonic arts and multimedia, music technology, improvisation, analysis, and new music studies. The Centre highlights inter-disciplinarity in all areas of research, fostering contexts in which creative cross-fertilisations can impact on technical and aesthetic innovation.
CeReNeM hosts a vibrant postgraduate programme with over 50 Masters and PhD students from 21 different countries, supported through a programme of concerts with artists and ensembles in residence including Apartment House, the Bozzini Quartet, ELISION Ensemble and leading soloists, outstanding facilities such as the 48-channel/66-loudspeaker HISS system and the 25.4-channel SPIRAL studio, an extensive seminar and workshop series, and the software development platforms of the Creative Coding Lab.
CeReNeM leads the Speculations in Sound international research network, a programme of lectures, symposia and publications in collaboration with many of the leading institutions for contemporary music worldwide, including, amongst others, Harvard, Columbia, UCSD, Université de Montréal (CIRMMT), Queens University Belfast (SARC), National University of Singapore (Yong Siew Toh Conservatory), IRCAM, and NoTAM (Oslo).
